Mechanisms

Questions on mechanisms generally do not require details of materials or dimensions and are more asking you to “invent” how to change an available input movement into a required output movement. You should know about levers, (fulcrum, load and effort), linkages, fixed and moving pivots, springs, sliders, cams and cranks. Also revise gears and pulleys

Example of Mechanism questions are 1998 Paper 4 questions 5(a) and 5(b)(ii), 1999 Paper 4 question 1(e) and 1999 Paper 4 question 4(a)

Motion

A simple way to get marks is to recognise the four types of motion, (movement), (linear, reciprocating, rotary and oscillating), and how to change one type of motion to another
